Peter Murdoch

Artist, South Australia

Profile

Born in 1954, I grew up on the family farm at Warooka on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. My childhood interest in art and creative pursuits led me to train as an art teacher in the early 1970s. Teaching wasn't for me and so, naturally, I followed this with paraprofessional training in library studies during the late 1980s. While working in libraries I made a foray into the world of desktop publishing and by the mid-1990s had found digital graphic design and publication development a natural fit for my character.

After the 1980s I set aside my art practice to focus on family and work but since 2006, with periodic bursts of activity, have sought to resume my professional practice. In 2015, after 20 years living in Willaston and commuting by train to Adelaide for work, I moved to Mintaro in the Clare Valley to pursue my interests.

My relationship with art practice seems to be both sporadic and idiosyncratic; lacklustre and hesitant at times, unfettered and obsessive at others. My work and ideas come, as they do, bubbling to the surface at their own pace.

I generally favour working in two dimensions, including painting, drawing and digital mediums. My work draws on the juxtaposition of random thoughts and observations, on composition, contemplation and circumstance. Simplicity attracts me, space also.
